THE FELLOWSHIPS

Why Fellowships?

We believe that an antidote to capitalism is community, and that our ideas come more alive when we share our visions collectively. The Weavers Project fellowships support Black activists and artists building bodies of work that are rooted in a Black Feminist Praxis tradition, abolition, radical imagination, and the rigorous pursuits of political education and embodiment. Please support our fellowships by donating now. To stay in the loop about the fellowships, please read our updates, sign up for our mailing list, follow us on Instagram, LinkedIn, and X.

The Black Feminist Artist Fellowship

As a result of that learning, we are proud and excited to announce our new fellowship initiative, The Black Feminist Artist Fellowship (BFAF). Launched in July 2023, BFAF provides direct support to Black women, Trans, and non-binary artists in recognition of their outstanding creative work. The BFAF supports artists in fostering the creation of new art that adds to the public discourse and the continuum of Black Feminist Thought. The fellowship provides artists with: 1) an opportunity for critical dialogue with peers; 2) a 10-day residency for rest and experimentation supported by an unrestricted $1,500 stipend; 3) an unrestricted cash award of $5,000; 4) a curated group exhibition, and 5) a network of Black feminist artists, scholars, organizers and practitioners. Throughout the process, artists will have access to artists, scholars, donors, social movement organizations, and institutions who will provide historical and contextual support to help further their work. The Weavers Project Fellowship

The Weavers Project Fellowship had one cohort from 2017-2019. The first cohort consisted of five fellows, who received $50,000 a year for three years of unrestricted funds, and an additional rapid response grant of $20,000 in light of COVID-19.  The Fellowship included in-person retreats, network-building opportunities, relational organizing tactics, embodiment practices, monthly cohort calls, technical assistance, individual support, and more. Learn about the cohort here. After the cohort ended we engaged in a learning process – evaluating and reflecting on the experiences of the first cohort and building out what the next fellowship program will look like.
